Beaufort, NC:Coolest Small Town in America’

Beaufort, NC: ‘Coolest Small Town in America’.
Beaufort was established in 1709 and incorporated in 1723, Beaufort is the third-oldest town in North Carolina (after Bath and Edenton). On February 1, 2012, Beaufort was ranked as "America's Coolest Small Town" by readers of Budget Travel Magazine. Below, photo, circa 1900’on the beach. Fish houses dominated the Beaufort waterfront.

Beaufort docks and boardwalk scene:
Halloween approaches. This cool display, (Ken H) took this photo last August, a year ago…Hurricane Florence was still about two weeks away. The building seen here had very bad water damage. It is where the Fudge Factory and Ice Cream shop was located. It is still not open over a year later.

Immigration ACLU says 1,500 more migrant children were taken from parents by the Trump administration.
Oct. 24, 2019.  The American Civil Liberties Union said Thursday that the Trump administration separated 1,556 more immigrant children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border than has previously been disclosed to the public. The majority of the children are ages 12 and under, including more than 200 considered “tender age” because they are under 5 years old.

New Beaufort Motel Margaritaville:
It appears that the approval process for this motel to be built on the grounds next door to the present Beaufort Yacht Club is progressing. The developers, headed by former NC State Senator Thomas, have made major concessions, re: height, now complying with Beaufort’s building code regarding the Historic District. The hotel is across the street from the ‘district’. Issues regarding ‘parking’, remain. Below is a typical room. As a candidate for Town Commissioner, I want to be clear. I am for the motel, however, that is - IF the parking issues are fairly and agreeably resolved and are fair to bordering homes and businesses.

My blog will posting will ‘appear’ periodically- once, approximately, every 10 to 15 days. No set schedule. .UNLESS major ‘newsy issues’ arise and demand comment.

  1. The town of Beaufort was established by legislative action in 1713. All deeds, from 1713 until 1722 (when Carteret precinct was carved from Craven)were kept in the New Bern Court House, and included laid out "...on the 2nd day of October 1713 and by ye permission of ye Lords Proprietors intended for a township by ye name of Beaufort." Before 1713, there were no documented settlers on land that would become Beaufort. So - Beaufort is the state's 4th oldest town, behind 1705 Bath, 1709 New Bern, and 1712 Edenton. Documentation for 1713 is included in my new book. Hopefully the town will finally acknowledge the actual date. https://chronicleofhistory.blogspot.com/
