Blog 4: Sweetwater Creek Hard Times

VOTE FOR KEN

Vote for Ken Humphrey for commissioner in Beaufort!
Early voting goes on right up to and through 7PM November 5, 2019. I will be at the Main Beaufort Board of Elections (outside in the parking lot…in the ‘legal electioneering space’)…All-day Monday and all day Tuesday, 4th and 5th. If you can support me, use your social media outlets to encourage ‘like-minded’ friends to go and VOTE FOR KEN! I purposefully have not accepted even one dollar from donors who were so kind to offer. To them, I say thanks again!

NOT TO WORRY!
It only ‘looks like’ Beaufort is sinking. You are not actually ‘seeing’ what you ‘think you are seeing’. Relax. Who you gonna’ believe? ME..or your lyin’ eyes? I know. You have been seeing more and more people walking around in Beaufort wearing those ‘trendy’ light, thin inflatable life jackets…some with snorkel and mask. Personally, I think it is a gross over-reaction. (photos by Ken Humphrey. Vote for Ken for Beaufort Commissioner!)
On A More Serious Note: Re tides – ‘A king tide is a non-scientific term used to describe the predicted highest high-tide and lowest low-tide events of the year. King tides occur during a perigean (when Moon is closest to Earth) spring tide (full and new moon); in other words, a full or new moon must co-occur when the Moon is closest to Earth in its elliptical orbit.’

WOMEN ARE BECOMING MORE AND MORE PROMINENT IN POLITICS:
Let’s honor the early women suffragettes as they have reached 100 years since becoming prominent in the US.
Before the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, individual states had passed legislation that allowed women to vote in different types of elections; some only allowed women to vote in school or municipal elections, some required that women owned property, and some territories extended full suffrage to women, only to take it away once they became states. Although legally entitled to vote, black women were effectively denied voting rights in numerous Southern states until 1965.

Beaufort, NC:Coolest Small Town in America’

Beaufort, NC: ‘Coolest Small Town in America’.
Beaufort was established in 1709 and incorporated in 1723, Beaufort is the third-oldest town in North Carolina (after Bath and Edenton). On February 1, 2012, Beaufort was ranked as "America's Coolest Small Town" by readers of Budget Travel Magazine. Below, photo, circa 1900’on the beach. Fish houses dominated the Beaufort waterfront.

Beaufort docks and boardwalk scene:
Halloween approaches. This cool display, (Ken H) took this photo last August, a year ago…Hurricane Florence was still about two weeks away. The building seen here had very bad water damage. It is where the Fudge Factory and Ice Cream shop was located. It is still not open over a year later.

Immigration ACLU says 1,500 more migrant children were taken from parents by the Trump administration.
Oct. 24, 2019.  The American Civil Liberties Union said Thursday that the Trump administration separated 1,556 more immigrant children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border than has previously been disclosed to the public. The majority of the children are ages 12 and under, including more than 200 considered “tender age” because they are under 5 years old.

New Beaufort Motel Margaritaville:
It appears that the approval process for this motel to be built on the grounds next door to the present Beaufort Yacht Club is progressing. The developers, headed by former NC State Senator Thomas, have made major concessions, re: height, now complying with Beaufort’s building code regarding the Historic District. The hotel is across the street from the ‘district’. Issues regarding ‘parking’, remain. Below is a typical room. As a candidate for Town Commissioner, I want to be clear. I am for the motel, however, that is - IF the parking issues are fairly and agreeably resolved and are fair to bordering homes and businesses.

My blog will posting will ‘appear’ periodically- once, approximately, every 10 to 15 days. No set schedule. .UNLESS major ‘newsy issues’ arise and demand comment.

Ken Humphrey
Candidate for Beaufort Commissioner

Election Note:
Beaufort COMMISSIONERS RACE.
This blog author is running for one of the three seats up for election.

Three of my main issues:
First a fact – We live in paradise, go slow with changes.  Let’s not mess it up.

(1.) Getting Beaufort’s streets repaved, repaired in a carefully managed plan and progression.

(2.) Keep Beaufort’s Historical Heritage preserved forever.

(3.) Continue to work on the Parking situation, to make it fair for everyone – tourists, resort-restaurant workers, and for local businesses. I would be willing to compromise when it is the majority will, with fairness to all. Let’s all go forward together while listening to everyone.

Now the site of The Boathouse Marina.

Iconic photo of a time gone by.

As many as 60 to 75 shad boats would be in Taylor's Creek at one time. The industry thrived from the late 1800s to 1970s when it started to fade year by year. The one remaining shad fleet and shad processing factory today is in Reedsville, Virginia.

The Democratic Women’s Party has grown and is growing exponentially...We are now seeing it everywhere: The number of outspoken, politically active - “Nasty Wimmins”... a term of endearment! (this editor’s moniker for them on Facebook, alias’ ‘Screamin’ Libs”.) Women, are moving to the front of the line. Have you noticed?...They don't ask permission anymore. It is wonderful thing to see. Their time has come...and they recognize it.

COMMISSIONERS RACE, BEAUFORT:

ENVIRONMENT:

BAD NEWS:
....EPA coal ash existing, protective rules are under assault from Washington.
All EPA clean-air, clean water regs are under full assault now by the Trump administration …….A push is underway to convince the U.S. EPA to revise relatively new rules regulating coal ash waste disposal and storage, changes that could affect Duke Energy’s cleanup of coal ash in North Carolina.
....The EPA is evaluating requests from power utilities and others to possibly modify two rules governing how utilities manage their coal ash waste...In 2014, structural issues came to the fore when an estimated 39,000 tons of coal ash spilled into the Dan River in Eden after a stormwater pipe beneath an ash pond at Duke Energy’s Dan River Steam Station ruptured Feb. 2. The pipe was sealed later in the month...
Southern Environmental Law Center. August 7, 2017, by Catherine Clabby.

....North Carolina Commercial Fishermen continue to fight for rights:
Well, it’s now October and they’re still in session! However, there was some movement recently when the House voted to override the Governor’s budget veto. The override is now in the Senate and it will take at least one Democrat to break from the fold to pull that off, so it’s unsure what will happen.

Although it’s technically possible that the legislators could consider more action on fish-related stuff, it’s very doubtful.

....With all the acrimony now in the halls of the legislative building, one might get punched if they even mention fish!

Mark Twain: “The difference between just a word ..and the right word, is the difference between a lightening bug – and lightening!”

POLITICS - NATIONAL INTERNATIONAL NEWS:

Ukraine Debacle - How much more can America stand? This Russian mole...?           President Trump has sounded the bugle to "circle of the wagons!"
More and more, career diplomats are now publicly contradicting the president's 'explanation' of 'no pressure' on Ukraine Pres, Zelensky. They are saying: "It is unthinkable to tie military assistance, long committed for Ukraine's defense against Russians at their border, to an investigation of a domestic political rival."
There is clearly the appearance of 'quid pro quo':
(1.) You investigate Biden
(2.) You get the already pledged $488 million in weapons - But nothing happens...'until then'.

Trump defends Syria withdrawal amid outcry from Kurdish allies.
Trump’s insane ‘Tweet: As I have stated strongly before, and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!)," Believe it or not! Trump’s move ‘infuriated’ both Republican stalwarts, Moscow Mitch and the ever nimble Lindsay Graham.

IMPEACHMENTgate: Truth closes in. “GET A GRIP!': Colin Powell scolds Republicans for enabling Trump . Former Secretary of State Colin Powell unleashed on the Republican Party and White House officials for enabling President Trump and allowing United States foreign policy to devolve into "shambles."

SCIENCE

A French man paralyzed in a nightclub accident has walked again.
...thanks to a brain-controlled exoskeleton, providing hope to tetraplegics seeking to regain movement...The patient trained for months, harnessing his brain signals to control a computer-simulated avatar to perform basic movements before using the robot device to walk...Scientists described the trial results as a breakthrough.

ELECTRIC CARS: Duke Energy plans to install 2500 EV charging stations.

Auto repair shops will go away. A gasoline engine has 20,000 individual parts. An electrical motor has 20. Electric cars are sold with lifetime guarantees and are only repaired by dealers. It takes only 10 minutes to remove and replace an electric motor. Faulty electric motors are not repaired in the dealership but are sent to a regional repair shop that repairs them with robots. Gas stations will go away. Parking meters will be replaced by meters that dispense electricity. Companies will install electrical recharging stations; in fact, they’ve already started. You can find them at select Dunkin Donuts locations. Most (of the smart) major auto manufacturers have already designated money to start building new plants that only build electric cars. Coal industries will go away. Gasoline/oil companies will go away. Drilling for oil will stop. So, say goodbye to OPEC (Oil Producing and Exporting Countries) Homes will produce and store electrical energy during the day and then what they don’t use they will sell it back to the grid. The grid stores it and dispenses it to industries that are high electricity users. A baby of today will only see personal cars in museums.
BTW: Has anybody seen the Tesla roof? Solar tiles can be put on a home roof so that the tiles match your decor.

MISSOULA, Montana – ‘Hair Blower Momma” slows speeding drivers!
Patti Baumgartner wanted drivers to stop speeding and slowdown in her Montana neighborhood so she took action herself. A photo of the mother and grandmother sitting on the side of the road using a hair dryer as a fake radar gun went viral on social media., Missoula, Mont., TV station KPAX reported. Montana state trooper Noah Pesola caught wind of a tweet with the photo and made the grandmother a honorary trooper. "The best thing I could think of was to give her a trooper hat and a badge to make her look a little more official,” he said.

“The Darkest Places in Hell……are reserved for those who remain silent or neutral in times of moral crisis.” Dante Alighiri, from his Devine Comedy.

Closing thought and question:
This country, the United States of America, is at a major, Moral Crossroads now. What can I do? What can you do?

The FUTURE is approaching faster than most of us can handle.
